Abrau-Dyurso, Wine village near Novorossiysk, Russia.
Abrau-Dyurso is a wine village in the Municipal Formation of the City of Novorossiysk, Russia, spread along the shore of Lake Abrau. The settlement sits west of Novorossiysk on gentle slopes and is surrounded by vineyards and wooded hillsides.
The village came into being in 1871 through a decree by Tsar Alexander III, who established an imperial winery here. The estate was meant to supply the court and Russian elites with their own sparkling wine.
The place name combines two Abkhazian words: abrau refers to a gap or hollow, while diursu describes the four water sources flowing from the surrounding hills. Visitors today still see the connection between the lake and the old springs along the vineyard terraces.
Access follows a road connection to Novorossiysk or along the Black Sea Highway, used to reach the village and the wineries. The lake offers swimming in summer, while the vineyards can be visited throughout the year.
The winery produced around six million bottles of sparkling wine in 2005 under the Soviet brand Sovetskoye Shampanskoye. This tradition dates back to when the estate ran the largest sparkling wine production in Russia.
