Tagansky Protected Command Point, Cold War military bunker in Tagansky District, Moscow, Russia.
The Tagansky Protected Command Point is a military command bunker located approximately 65 meters (213 feet) below ground, spanning about 7,000 square meters of underground space. The facility features interconnected tunnels that link to Moscow's metro system, creating a complex underground infrastructure.
Built between 1951 and 1956, this facility functioned as an emergency command center for Moscow's Air Defence District throughout the Cold War. It served as a critical hub for military operations and coordination during that tense geopolitical period.
The museum displays Soviet-era military equipment and planning rooms that show how officers worked during Cold War times. You can see the spaces where strategic decisions were made and understand the daily operations of those stationed here.
Access to the bunker is via elevator or stairs, and the descent takes several minutes due to its considerable depth below the city. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket, as the underground chambers remain cool year-round.
The bunker held resources to sustain 600 people for roughly one month, with stored food and water from two artesian wells tapping into deep underground sources. This self-sufficiency capability shows how long personnel could remain independent during emergencies.
