Saint Sophia and Dormition Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Tobolsk, Russia.
Saint Sophia and Dormition Cathedral is a brick Orthodox cathedral built in the Siberian Baroque style inside the Tobolsk Kremlin, standing about 47 meters tall. Its domed silhouette rises clearly above the kremlin walls and is the most visible structure in the whole compound.
The cathedral was built between 1683 and 1686 under Metropolitan Paul I of Tobolsk, making it one of the first stone buildings ever raised in Siberia. It replaced an earlier wooden church that had stood on the same spot as Russian settlement in the region was taking hold.
Inside the cathedral, visitors can see a tall iconostasis covered with religious icons and gilded woodwork that fills the main hall. Services are still held regularly here, and the building continues to be a working church rather than simply a museum.
The cathedral stands inside the Tobolsk Kremlin on a hill above the lower town, and reaching it on foot involves a noticeable climb. Once inside the kremlin grounds, the building is easy to locate and the surrounding courtyard gives enough space to take in the whole structure.
During construction, the roof vault collapsed completely, forcing builders to start over with thicker pillars and reinforced arches. The lessons learned from this setback shaped how later stone buildings across Siberia were designed and put together.
