The cemetery was established in 1910 when the Donskoy Monastery burial ground became too full for more graves. It quickly became a burial site for major Soviet figures and political personalities.

The grounds are open from 9 AM to 7 PM between May and September, and from 9 AM to 5 PM from October through April. Walking is the main way to explore, so comfortable shoes and a map or guide help visitors navigate the expansive grounds easily.
Common Grave Number 1 holds the ashes of political prisoners executed during Stalinist repression. The grave remained without any marker for decades until 1989, when a memorial was finally added.
