Darwin Museum, Natural history museum in Moscow, Russia
The State Darwin Museum is a natural history institution in Moscow housing more than 400,000 objects across three buildings, including fossils, taxidermy specimens and models of evolutionary processes. The collection shows the development of life on Earth through scientific evidence and educational displays.
Alexander Kohts founded this institution in 1907 when he opened his teaching collection on evolution to the public. It stands as the first museum in the world dedicated solely to presenting evolutionary science.
The exhibition halls preserve the work of Alexander Kohts, who began assembling his collection as a young biology teacher to explain evolutionary theory. Visitors today see taxidermy specimens and geological samples that students and researchers have used for over a century.
The institution opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM and is located on Vavilova Street 57. The three buildings connect through stairways and lifts, making all floors accessible.
The interactive exhibition uses light and sound effects to present biological concepts across 5,000 square meters (54,000 square feet) of floor space. Visitors can walk through different geological eras and follow evolutionary changes as they move.
