The Gorky Railway is a large rail network in central Russia spanning nine federal regions and carrying passengers and freight across vast distances. It connects Nizhny Novgorod with Moscow and other major cities in the area.
The route from Moscow through Vladimir to Nizhny Novgorod opened in 1862 and formed the foundation for later network growth. Throughout the 20th century the system expanded steadily and underwent modernization.
The railway received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1971, recognizing its contributions to transportation development in the Soviet Union.
