St. Michael's Church in Yaroslavl, Eastern Orthodox church in Yaroslavl, Russia
St. Michael's Church is an Eastern Orthodox church on Pervomayskaya Street in central Yaroslavl, Russia, topped by five domes. Its facades are covered with colored ceramic tiles, a hallmark of the local Yaroslavl school of architecture.
St. Michael's Church was founded in 1215 and was substantially rebuilt in the early 18th century, when it took the form seen today. That reconstruction came during a period when wealthy Yaroslavl merchants were funding the construction of new stone churches across the city.
The name of the church honors Archangel Michael, whose image holds a prominent place inside the building. Visitors who step inside can see wall paintings depicting holy figures and biblical scenes in the bright colors typical of the Yaroslavl school.
The church sits on Pervomayskaya Street in central Yaroslavl and can be reached on foot from most of the old town sights. Since the building is still used for worship, modest dress is expected and visitors should keep noise to a minimum.
The church in its present form took over 20 years to complete because it was funded by several different merchants who each took over the project in turn. This explains why some parts of the building differ subtly from others, even though the overall appearance feels consistent.
