The Saint Michael the Archangel Church stands within the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin walls, featuring traditional Russian architectural elements and stone construction techniques.
Founded in 1221 as a wooden structure, the current stone building dates from 1628 and was constructed under the direction of architect Lawrence Semenov.
The cathedral houses the remains of Kuzma Minin, a national hero who led Russian forces during the Polish-Lithuanian invasion in the early 17th century.
Nine bells occupy the church tower, with the largest one weighing 530 kilograms and bearing the name 'Lawyer', installed in March 2009.
The church represents the oldest cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod, maintaining its original location since the city's establishment in the 13th century.
