Nedzheli

Nedzheli is a large lake in central Yakutia surrounded by extensive larch forests that shape the landscape. The body of water stretches considerably across the region, creating a dominant natural feature.

The lake received its protected status in the 1990s when Russia reformed its nature conservation laws. This designation was part of a broader effort to safeguard water bodies and forest regions across Siberia.

The lake serves as a fishing ground where local communities practice traditional methods to catch fish. These practices remain part of daily life for people in the surrounding settlements.

The lake freezes from October to June, making surface movement possible but risky during winter months. Summer provides the best window for visiting, when the surrounding area is more accessible.

The lake is fed by several rivers, including the Kyunkyuy, creating an important habitat for birds like Siberian cranes. These inflows support a diverse bird population that can be observed throughout the seasons.
