Stolobny Island, Monastic complex on Lake Seliger, Russia
The island houses a large religious complex with multiple churches and buildings spread across its territory connected by a causeway to mainland.
Saint Nilus established the monastery in 1594, initially living in a dugout before constructing a wooden hut and chapel for prayers.
The monastery complex combines religious architecture from different periods, including churches from the 17th century and neoclassical structures from later periods.
Visitors can reach the island through a stone causeway built in 1812, which connects the religious complex to the town of Ostashkov.
During the Feast of Epiphany in January, Orthodox Christians gather at the monastery to immerse themselves in the cold waters of Lake Seliger.
