Nagurskoye, airfield
Nagurskoye is a military airstrip on Alexandra Land in Franz Josef Land. The runway measures 2,500 meters and features a solid surface that allows large aircraft to land year-round, even in extreme winter conditions. Adjacent to the runway sits a large military complex with power generation, fuel depots, supply storage, and vehicle garages spanning about 14,000 square meters.
The airstrip was originally established in the 1950s during the Cold War as a staging area for Soviet long-range bombers capable of reaching the United States. Over the decades, it developed into a strategic position in the Arctic, now central to Russia's interests in this region.
The airstrip is located at 80 degrees north and ranks among the world's most northern military installations with extreme weather and long winter darkness. The complex operates independently with its own heating, supplies, and infrastructure to support personnel even during extended winter months.
A cargo vessel named Yuri Arshenevsky transported over 13,000 tons of materials from Murmansk to the base, including concrete blocks and filled bags for a new permanent runway. This construction replaces the temporary one from 2015 and will support heavier aircraft and more frequent flights throughout the year.
