NAMI, Research automobile institute in Moscow, Russia
NAMI is a research center for automobiles and engines in Moscow that deals with vehicle development, powertrain engineering, and transportation innovations. The facility operates multiple test benches, laboratories, and proving grounds for evaluating vehicles, components, and accessories.
The institute was established in 1918 and developed the first Soviet passenger car NAMI-1 in 1927. These early experiments laid the groundwork for later industrial automobile production in the USSR.
The institute serves as a central body for certifying vehicles and components across Russia. Its laboratories and test tracks provide an important training ground for automotive engineers.
The facility is located on Avtomotornaya Street in the eastern part of Moscow, accessible via the metro station of the same name. Visits are typically limited to industry professionals and official delegations as it is an active research and testing facility.
In 2022 the institute took control of AvtoVAZ manufacturing plants and now oversees development of the Aurus vehicle line. These limousines are produced mainly for government officials and state ceremonies.
