Акатовская курганная группа

Akatovo burial mounds are an archaeological site with several earthen burial structures scattered across a wooded area near the Gorenka River. These mounds were systematically excavated between 1961 and 1969 and contained human remains from the 12th and 13th centuries.

The site developed in the 12th century as a burial place for a Slavic community and continued in use across generations. Modern excavations in the mid-20th century transformed it into a documented archaeological monument for studying the region's early medieval history.

The burial ground reveals how early Slavic communities in this region honored their deceased and organized their settlements. Pottery fragments and tools found here show what daily life and craftsmanship looked like in those centuries.

The site is accessible through the surrounding forest, with information boards on location explaining the discoveries and their significance. Visiting is possible year-round, though warmer months offer clearer views of the mound structures as vegetation is less dense.

The excavations revealed the remains of men, women, and children, showing that entire families and the wider community were buried at this site. This provides rare insights into how early medieval settlements were structured and organized socially.
