Annenkrone, Federal cultural heritage site in Siikaniemi, Russia
Annenkrone is a fortification in Vyborg with four bastions and three ravelins on the western side. A moat surrounds the structures, combined with the surrounding water routes to provide defense.
The fort was built in 1741 during the reign of Anna of Russia to secure the city militarily. A German engineer called Burkhard Christoph von Münnich led the construction and used modern defensive techniques.
The fort shows how military builders of that era designed defenses, with strong bastions and earthworks that used water as protection. Visitors can still see these construction methods and understand how such places controlled the surrounding region.
The site is accessible year-round and can be explored on foot, where you can see the bastions and moat. Informational signs on site help you understand the structure and defensive functions.
The site was the scene of a tragic event in 1918 during the Finnish Civil War that permanently marked its history. This dark episode is now part of the broader story of the place and its region.
