Prison of Vyborg Castle

The Prison of Vyborg Castle is a medieval structure with thick stone walls spanning multiple levels connected by narrow passages. The building features small windows with iron bars and sturdy construction designed to contain and guard prisoners securely.

This structure originated during the Swedish fortress period in the late 13th century. For several centuries it served as a prison for soldiers and civilians during various wars and periods of control over the region.

Visitors can still see scratches and names that prisoners carved into the stone walls over the centuries. These marks tell stories of people who lived through captivity and wanted to leave a trace of themselves behind.

Access is available during regular castle opening hours, with guided tours providing detailed information. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended since the stairs and passages are narrow and uneven in places.

The prison retains its original medieval form with minimal alterations made over time. This makes it a rare example of authentic medieval incarceration architecture that has remained largely unchanged.
