Vyborg Castle, Medieval fortress in Vyborg, Russia
Vyborg Castle is a medieval fortress on a small island in Vyborg, Russia, dominated by the distinctive Saint Olaf Tower rising above its four-sided main structure. The castle contains multiple areas enclosed by walls, towers, and courtyards that reflect military design from different periods.
The fortress was founded in 1293 by Swedish marshal Torkel Knutsson as a military stronghold during the campaign into Karelian territory. It became a key point of control and influence in the region over the following centuries.
The castle displays the meeting of Swedish and Russian building styles, blending medieval European and Russian military construction methods. Visitors can see this architectural mix in the stone walls and towers as they explore the rooms and courtyards.
The site is reached by a bridge from the shore, and most areas are open for visitors to explore. Wearing comfortable shoes is helpful since the ground is uneven and exploring the multiple levels takes time.
During a 1495 siege, an unexplained explosion known as the Vyborg Blast occurred on Saint Andrew's Day and halted a Russian attack. The event is recorded in local accounts, but its exact cause remains unclear to this day.
