Vyborg Main Guardhouse

The Vyborg Main Guardhouse is a stone structure with Gothic Revival architectural features located where Krepostnaya Street meets Old Town Hall Square. The building displays the solid proportions and ornate stone details characteristic of military construction from the late 1700s.

This guardhouse was built in 1776 during Catherine the Great's reign as a military post for the expanding fortress city. In 1857, the structure received significant additions that expanded its capacity while keeping its original style intact.

The guardhouse sits at the heart of the old town center, showing how military structures were woven into daily civic life. Today you can see how the surrounding streets and square still orient themselves around this historic building.

The guardhouse is positioned at a central intersection in the old town, easily accessible on foot from most areas of the historic district. The location sits along a main thoroughfare, making it simple to find and visit without special directions.

The building was designed by Karl Johann Speckle, a German architect working during Russia's territorial expansion in the north. This blend of European architectural training applied to Russian military needs created something that still stands out in the city today.
