Барнаульский дендрарий, Botanical research garden in Barnaul, Russia
Barnaul Arboretum is a botanical research garden along the Ob River featuring more than 1,000 species of trees and shrubs from the Northern Hemisphere. The grounds span over 10 hectares with walking paths through natural woodland areas and carefully tended collections of rare plants.
The site was established in 1953 when researchers began bringing trees and shrubs from the Altai Mountains and surrounding regions to create a living collection. The project grew from scientific efforts to test which plant species could thrive in the local climate and conditions.
The garden displays plants organized by their geographic origins, showing trees and shrubs from North America, East Asia, and Central Russia growing alongside each other. This arrangement helps visitors understand how different regions of the world have their own distinct plant life.
The garden is open from May through October and is best explored on foot with marked paths throughout the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes as the trails wind through uneven terrain and wooded areas.
The garden features a notable alley of Manchurian walnut trees that create a leafy tunnel during the growing season. In autumn visitors can also pick sea buckthorn berries that grow throughout the grounds.
