Afontova Gora

Afontova Gora is an archaeological site and mountain on the Yenisei River bank in Krasnoyarsk. The hillside displays several stacked layers of soil and sediment containing remains of ancient environments and evidence of human occupation.

Systematic excavation began in 1884 and uncovered five separate campsites with evidence of mammoth hunting and human settlement from the Late Paleolithic period. The findings show that people lived and worked here during an era when giant animals roamed the region.

The name refers to the ancient inhabitants who left behind their tools and bone objects across the site. These items tell stories about how people hunted, made things, and lived their daily lives thousands of years ago.

The site is reachable from Krasnoyarsk via established paths, and visitors can join guided tours to learn about ongoing work. Plan your visit for warmer months when paths are easier to walk.

The excavations have recovered thousands of objects including stone and bone tools showing ancient manufacturing practices. DNA analysis of human remains revealed one of the earliest known cases of the genetic trait linked to blond hair.
