Gorny Institut, Metro station construction site in Gavan Municipal Okrug, Russia.
Gorny Institut is a metro station under construction in Saint Petersburg, located along Bolshoi Prospekt in the Gavan area on the western tip of Vasileostrovsky District. It will be part of Metro Line 4 and will connect to Teatralnaya station, extending the network into a part of the city that currently has no metro access.
The western end of Vasilievsky Island has been without metro service for decades despite being a populated urban area. Plans to extend Line 4 in this direction date back many years, making this station one of the most long-awaited additions to the Saint Petersburg network.
The station takes its name from the Mining Institute, one of the oldest technical universities in Russia, which stands nearby on Bolshoi Prospekt. The institute's neoclassical building is a reference point in the neighborhood and gives the area a clear identity tied to science and engineering.
The site is along Bolshoi Prospekt V.O. in the Gavan area and is not yet open to the public. Visitors passing through the neighborhood can see the construction works from the street, but there is nothing to access or visit on site.
The Mining Institute that gave this station its name was founded in 1773, making it one of the oldest technical universities still in operation in Russia. When the station opens, its entrance will sit just steps away from the institute's main building, creating a direct link between the two.
