Base navale de Vidiaïevo, Russian Navy submarine base in Vidyayevo, Murmansk Oblast, Russia
The base at Vidiaïevo is a Russian Navy facility on the Barents Sea in Murmansk Oblast that supports the maintenance and deployment of nuclear submarines. The complex includes multiple docking areas and support infrastructure designed for Arctic operations.
The facility began operations in the 1960s as a base for diesel-electric submarines before transitioning to nuclear-powered vessels from 1979 onward. This shift made it a key center for Soviet and later Russian Arctic naval operations.
The base carries the name of Soviet submarine commander Fedor Vidyayev, who demonstrated naval excellence during World War II operations.
The base is located in the northern Barents Sea region and is accessible only through special authorization, as it remains an active military facility. Visitors can explore the surrounding area from outside, but public entry to the naval complex itself is restricted.
The K-141 Kursk, one of the most notable submarines from this base, sank in the Barents Sea in 2000 in an incident that drew international attention. This tragedy led to important changes in Russian Navy emergency response procedures.
