Volokolamsk Kremlin

The Volokolamsk Kremlin is a medieval fortress complex atop Cathedral Hill featuring two distinct cathedrals. The white stone Resurrection Cathedral from the 15th century stands alongside the 19th-century red brick St Nicholas Cathedral, which has a five-tiered bell tower.

The kremlin was founded in 1135 and served as a fortified stronghold with earthen mounds to defend against raids. During the 20th century, it suffered serious damage from German occupation forces in World War II.

The Resurrection Cathedral displays preserved fragments of 15th-century frescoes that reflect the artistic techniques and religious expression of medieval Russian painters. These works offer insight into the spiritual meaning this site held for believers across the centuries.

Visitors can explore the complex and its museum exhibitions on most days, with guided tours available on site. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are hilly and require considerable walking.

The kremlin houses a rare collection of artifacts from different periods of Russian history, displayed in the museum rooms. These objects tell the story of the region from medieval times to the present day.
