East Vyborg Fortress, Military fortress in Vyborg, Russia
East Vyborg Fortress is a 19th-century military fortification in Vyborg, Russia, built across two hills and enclosed by thick stone walls. The site has several levels connected by sloped paths, with observation points that look out over the surrounding terrain and the nearby harbor.
The fortress was built in the 1860s as part of a broader effort to strengthen the defenses of the city and its harbor. Over the following decades it was gradually reinforced, and it remained part of the regional defense network into the early 20th century.
The name East Vyborg Fortress reflects its position on the eastern side of the city, where the two hills it sits on give visitors a clear sense of how the terrain itself was used as part of the defense. Walking between the different parts of the site, you can see how the layout follows the natural shape of the land rather than imposing a regular geometric plan.
The site can be reached on foot from central Vyborg, but the terrain is hilly and some sections involve a noticeable climb. Sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, as the ground is uneven in several parts of the complex.
The fortress is listed as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning it has been nominated by Russia but not yet officially recognized. This status places it alongside a handful of other 19th-century military sites in Russia that are under review for international recognition.
