Odintsovo, Urban settlement in Moscow Oblast, Russia
Odintsovo is an urban settlement west of Moscow in Moscow Oblast, covering roughly eight square miles and including several incorporated villages. The place sits along the highway and railway line toward the capital and serves as home to over one hundred thousand people.
The settlement began in the late 14th century as a land grant to a boyar named Andrei Odinets and remained a rural community for centuries. After the railway line to Moscow opened in the mid-1800s the place grew into a suburb and gained city status in 1957.
The city maintains a strong sports presence through its championship-winning volleyball teams Iskra for men and Zarechie Odintsovo for women.
The settlement is easily reached by train or highway from Moscow in under an hour. Visitors find mainly residential neighborhoods and local shops along with some sports facilities and recreational areas.
The local ice palace earned praise from professional hockey players across North America and the former Soviet Union for its superior ice surface. This facility hosts both training sessions for local sports teams and public events throughout the year.
