Polenovo, Artist colony in Tula Oblast, Russia.
Polenovo is an art colony along the Oka River banks in Tula Oblast, composed of traditional wooden houses and artist studios. The complex spreads across a large site with multiple buildings that the painter Vasily Polenov himself designed and built.
Artist Vasily Polenov founded this art colony in 1892, creating a place where artists could live and work together. After the October Revolution, the colony became a State Museum and has preserved his artistic legacy since then.
The art colony displays Russian realistic paintings and functions today as a place where people gather to engage with artistic traditions. The site preserves how artists once lived and worked here, allowing visitors to experience this way of life.
The museum is open to visitors on most weekdays, with early afternoon being the best time to explore the grounds at your own pace. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are extensive and there is much to see on foot.
The art colony is managed today by direct descendants of the founder, making it a remarkable exception among Russian cultural institutions. This family tradition shapes how the collection is preserved and how visitors experience the estate.
