Darwin Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Vologda and Yaroslavl Oblasts, Russia
The Darwin Nature Reserve extends over 112,000 hectares, with 67,000 hectares of land and remaining waters along the northwestern shore of the Rybinsk Reservoir.
The Russian government established the Darwin Nature Reserve on July 18, 1945, to study natural changes following the construction of the Rybinsk Hydroelectric Station.
The reserve maintains a scientific collection of butterflies representing all flying insects from Northwestern Russia, gathered through fifty years of field research.
Visitors can observe native wildlife including martens, ermines, squirrels, otters, wolves, badgers, foxes, moose, and bears within the pine forest environment.
The reserve contains the highest concentration of white-tailed eagle nesting sites worldwide and the largest European density of osprey nests.
