Yaroslavl Oblast, Administrative region in Central Federal District, Russia.
Yaroslavl Oblast is an administrative region in Central Russia, stretching along the Volga River northwest of Moscow. The area includes eleven cities and multiple rural districts, with the city of Yaroslavl as its capital.
The administrative division was created in March 1936 during the Soviet period as a separate oblast. About three decades later, the region received a state award for its industrial output.
The region maintains traditional Russian architecture through 224 rural districts, featuring religious buildings, merchant houses, and several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The region lies along the M8 highway, which connects Moscow to northern areas, and has a wide rail network. Travelers can find multiple entry points to smaller cities and rural areas within the territory.
The Rybinsk Reservoir within the territory is one of the largest artificial water bodies in Europe, built in the 1940s. The reservoir feeds several hydroelectric stations and changed the Volga river landscape considerably.
