Boris and Gleb monastery in Rostov the Great

The Boris and Gleb monastery is a fortified stone complex with fifteen defensive towers standing beside a lake near Rostov the Great. Within its walls sit a main cathedral, Annunciation Church, and refectory that form a closed spiritual community.

The monastery was founded in 1363 when Saint Sergius of Radonezh blessed two hermits who wished to build it. The fortified structure became an important refuge during turbulent periods in Russian history.

The monastery served as a refuge for people seeking spiritual comfort and divine blessing. Pilgrims traveled here to pray and find renewal in faith within its stone walls.

The grounds sit beside a peaceful lake and are reached by country paths that are easy to walk. A visit is best done on foot, and flat paths allow for a pleasant stroll around the buildings.

A holy monk named Irinarch lived here and foresaw the invasion of foreign forces. He actually met with the commander of these troops and negotiated for the sanctuary's protection.
