Church of Saint John the Evangelist on Ishnya

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist on Ishnya is a wooden building with a distinctive structure rising about three meters above ground level. It features an octagonal base supporting a hexagonal cupola that defines its silhouette within the village of Bogoslov.

The building was constructed between 1687 and 1689 and marks a site connected to a spiritual vision from the 11th century. Saint Avraamy of Rostov reportedly experienced an apparition of Saint John at this location, giving the structure its religious significance.

The church functions as a museum displaying reproductions of religious objects that reflect its role as a place of worship. Visitors can see replicas of carved religious artwork that demonstrate the craftsmanship of earlier times.

During their journey celebrating the Romanov dynasty tercentenary, Emperor Nicholas II and his family visited this wooden church in May 1913. This visit by a ruling family made the small church a notable site in Russian history.
