Журавли, War memorial on Sokolovaya Mountain, Saratov, Russia
The Cranes monument stands on Sokolovaya Mountain in Saratov and consists of three slender concrete pylons rising 40 meters high, supporting a group of twelve white metal crane figures. The birds are arranged as if they are flying upward and disappearing into the distance.
On May 9, 1982, the memorial was unveiled to honor local residents who died in the war between 1941 and 1945. The hill and structure were built specifically for this purpose.
The name refers to a poem by Rasul Gamzatov, in which the souls of the fallen return as white cranes. The twelve metal birds against the sky recall this poetic image, familiar to many visitors.
A stairway with over 200 steps leads to the observation point on the artificial hill. The names of major battles are marked along the ascent.
The complex sits at 160 meters above sea level and is visible from many parts of the city, the river, and the bridge. On clear days, the view extends far across the Volga valley.
