Izmaylovo Estate, Royal estate in Izmaylovo District, Russia
Izmaylovo Estate is a sprawling royal residence in Moscow's Izmaylovo District, situated on an artificial island surrounded by the Serebryanka River and ponds. The grounds feature a five-domed cathedral, palace gates, a tower, and house exhibitions of manuscripts, early printed books, and Old Russian paintings.
The estate was built during the 1670s under Alexis I and served the Romanov family as a country residence. It later transformed into a museum and is now part of Moscow's unified museum system.
The five-domed Pokrovsky Cathedral shows decorative details shaped by local Russian craftsmen of that era. Walking through the grounds, you encounter this sacred building as a physical reminder of 17th-century Russian Orthodox traditions.
The grounds are accessible with clear paths connecting the various buildings and exhibition areas. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk between different sections to see everything the estate offers.
Young Peter the Great spent his childhood on the estate and found his first boat here, sparking a lifelong fascination with naval matters. This early discovery shaped his path toward becoming one of Russia's most transformative rulers.
