Church of the Protection of the Theotokos in Izmaylovo, Eastern Orthodox church in Izmaylovo District, Moscow, Russia
The Church of the Protection of the Theotokos in Izmaylovo is a brick Eastern Orthodox church with five domes and a bell tower, set within the Izmaylovo Estate in Moscow. Built in the Naryshkin Baroque style, the building features ornate red brick facades that are characteristic of this architectural tradition.
The church was built in 1671 on the orders of Tsar Alexis, who developed the Izmaylovo Estate into a major royal residence outside Moscow. It was part of a group of buildings raised on the estate at that time, intended to reflect the power and ambitions of the Russian tsars.
The church belongs to the Naryshkin Baroque style, which combined ornamental decoration with Russian Orthodox church traditions, and its details are easy to see from the outside. Walking around the building, visitors can observe the carved window frames and layered brick cornices that make this style so recognizable.
The church sits within the Izmaylovo Estate grounds and can be reached on foot from the surrounding historic buildings. Since the church is used for regular services, it is best to visit outside of service times, and modest dress is expected when entering.
The Izmaylovo Estate was the place where the young Peter the Great first learned to sail, after finding an old boat in one of the estate's storehouses. This means the church stood on the very grounds that shaped the future founder of the Russian navy during his childhood.
