Kostomarovsky Spassky Monastery
Kostomarovsky Spassky Monastery, Cave monastery in Kostomarovo, Russia.
The monastery consists of multiple caves carved into a chalk mountain near the Don River, with eight rectangular columns supporting the main vault.
The monastic complex emerged in the mid-17th century when monks from Ukraine relocated to the Don steppes alongside Dnieper Cossacks to establish this sanctuary.
The monastery houses the Kostomarovskaya icon of the Mother of God, painted in the late 19th century, which bears marks from six bullet holes.
The monastery welcomes visitors daily and can be reached by car from Voronezh, with guided tours available through advance reservations at +7-473-945-4637.
During World War II, the monastery caves served as shelters for local residents, and in 1997 the complex reopened as a women's monastery.
