Krasnoe Cemetery, Historic cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
Krasnoe Cemetery is a historic burial ground on Pushkin Street in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, covering more than a century of burials. The site features traditional Russian grave markers and a memorial brick wall running along part of the grounds.
The cemetery was founded in the early 20th century and during the years 1918 to 1938 it also served as a burial site for prison inmates. That period left a lasting mark on how the site is remembered today.
A brick wall along the grounds carries memorial plaques for people buried here, and visitors often stop to read the names. Families tend to come regularly to leave flowers and care for the graves of their relatives.
The cemetery is open daily and can be reached on foot from Pushkin Street, where parking is also available near the main entrance. Visitors are expected to dress modestly and move quietly through the grounds.
Part of the grounds contains mass graves where victims were buried in unmarked sections, which are easy to walk past without noticing. Looking closely at different parts of the site reveals that some sections have no individual markers at all.
