Makaryev-Unzhensky Monastery

Makaryev-Unzhensky Monastery is a monastic complex in Makaryev along the Unzha River, enclosed by stone walls and four corner towers that protect several churches within. The compound includes the Trinity Cathedral with five domes, the Annunciation Church, and the Dormition Church, which occupy the interior of the fortified enclosure.

The monastery was founded in 1439 by Saint Macarius following the destruction of his previous monastery, and underwent multiple reconstructions until its closure after the 1917 Revolution. The Trinity Cathedral was built between 1664 and 1670, while additional structures like the refectory church were added in subsequent centuries.

The site is deeply connected to the veneration of Saint Macarius, whose relics are housed here and shape daily monastic life. Visitors can observe how the churches serve as active places of worship, with regular prayer services that continue throughout the year.

The monastery welcomes visitors and allows you to enter the churches during regular prayer services or simply explore the grounds at your own pace. It is worth taking time to walk through the courtyard and observe the different buildings to fully appreciate the site's architecture and layout.

The relics of Saint Macarius were returned to the monastery in 1995 after an extended absence. Their arrival marked a significant moment in the site's revival as a place of pilgrimage following the Soviet era.
