Matyra Reservoir, reservoir in Russia
Matyra Reservoir is an artificial lake in Lipetsk Oblast, Russia, formed by damming the Matyra River. The water is bordered by forests and flat sandy shores that open up along much of its length.
The reservoir was built in the 1950s to supply water to the NLMK steel plant being developed in the region at the time. Its construction required relocating farms and villages, and the basin was fully filled by 1977.
The reservoir takes its name from the Matyra River, which once flowed freely through this part of Lipetsk Oblast. Today its shores are a meeting point for local families who come to fish, swim, and spend time outdoors during the warmer months.
The area is open year-round, with sandy beaches suited for swimming in summer and frozen surfaces used for skating in winter. During cold months, visitors should be cautious on the ice, as conditions can vary and become unsafe.
Near the villages of Kazinka and Yarlykovo, in the upper part of the reservoir, lies the Khomut protected nature area, which shelters over 300 plant species including some listed as endangered. The same area is home to deer, moose, hares, and birds such as ducks and herons.
