Port of Murmansk, Commercial seaport in Murmansk, Russia.
The Port of Murmansk is a commercial port on the eastern shore of Kola Bay, in the far north of Russia. It has multiple berths and is equipped to handle different types of cargo throughout the year.
The port was founded in 1915 during World War I to give Russia a reliable outlet to the Atlantic. The first ship to arrive was the Drott, coming from New York shortly after the facility opened.
The barque Sedov, one of the largest sailing ships ever built, is moored at the quay and open to visitors. It has been used for decades to train young sailors and remains an active vessel today.
The port lies above the Arctic Circle, but the waterfront promenade is easily accessible on foot and offers good views of the activity on the water. Visiting in summer gives the best light, since the sun does not set for weeks during the polar day.
Murmansk is the largest city in the world located above the Arctic Circle, yet its port never freezes and needs no icebreaker support to stay open. This is entirely due to the Gulf Stream, whose warm current reaches this far north.
