The Roerich Family Museum and Institute is a museum in the Vasileostrovsky District of Saint Petersburg dedicated to the work of Nicholas Roerich and his descendants. It holds paintings, manuscripts, and documents covering several generations of artistic work.
The institution was founded in 2001 to preserve and present the legacy of Nicholas Roerich and his family. It was established with the aim of keeping their work permanently rooted in Saint Petersburg.
The museum is dedicated to the work of the Roerich family, who connected Russian painting with Eastern philosophy. In the exhibition rooms, visitors can see paintings where spiritual motifs from Central Asia and the Himalayas play a central role.
The museum sits close to Vasileostrovskaya Metro station and is open Wednesday through Sunday. Visiting the main galleries at a relaxed pace takes roughly one to two hours.
The collection holds around 288 original paintings by Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich, most of them showing landscapes from the Himalayas and Central Asia. Svetoslav Roerich was also a recognized portrait painter, and some of his portraits are part of the collection as well.
