The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is an Orthodox religious building in Vasileostrovsky District, constructed in Russian Revival style. It rises three stories above ground with one level below, built from brick and sandstone in a robust architectural design.

Originally, the building was part of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra administration until 1917, when Russia's political changes altered its status and oversight. The structure then developed independently and took on different roles within the city over time.

The church hosts regular Orthodox services that bring the local community together through traditional religious practices and gatherings. Visitors can observe the ornate iconostasis and decorated interior spaces that reflect Orthodox spiritual traditions.

During the 1960s, the building was converted into an indoor ice rink with Soviet leaders' portraits displayed inside. This unexpected use as a sports venue during Soviet times remains a striking chapter in the structure's past.
