St. Nicholas Monastery, 14th century Orthodox monastery in Pereslavl-Zalessky, Russia
St. Nicholas Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox complex in Pereslavl-Zalessky, enclosed by stone walls with several church buildings inside. A tall bell tower rises above the ensemble and can be seen from nearby streets.
The monastery was founded in 1348 by Saint Dmitry Prilutsky on marshy ground at the edge of the town. It was almost completely destroyed in a raid in 1382 but was rebuilt afterward and has been in use ever since.
The monastery is still active today, and Orthodox believers come here regularly for services and personal prayer. Visitors can observe the rhythm of monastic life simply by walking through the grounds during opening hours.
The monastery sits in the center of Pereslavl-Zalessky and is easy to reach on foot from the other historic sites in town. Dress modestly before entering, as the complex is an active place of worship.
The monastery holds relics of 84 saints from the Kiev Pechersk Caves monastery, kept in a dedicated chapel inside the walls. This is one of the few places outside Ukraine where such a large collection of these relics can be venerated.
