Embassy of Argentina, Moscow, Embassy mansion in Yakimanka District, Russia
The Embassy of Argentina in Moscow is a classical mansion at 72 Bolshaya Ordynka Street in the Yakimanka District. The facade combines Empire style features with eclectic elements added during later renovations.
The building was put up in 1823 and 1824 as a private home for merchant Nadezhda Lobanova, during the period when Moscow was being rebuilt after the 1812 fire. Argentina has used it as its embassy since 2007, before which it had served as the Rwandan embassy.
The building sits on Bolshaya Ordynka, a street lined with old mansions and churches that give the area a distinctive character. Visitors walking past can see the classical facade and the Argentine coat of arms above the entrance.
The mansion is within walking distance of several metro stations in central Moscow, making it easy to reach on foot. As an active diplomatic building, the interior is not open to the general public without prior arrangement.
The property spent many years in the hands of the Pugovkin family, a merchant family, before it entered diplomatic use. Careful observers can still spot traces of this commercial past in the architectural details of the building.
