Uktus, Historical residential district in Ekaterinburg, Russia
Uktus is a residential district in the southern part of Ekaterinburg, located along the Iset River. It is made up of a mix of older wooden houses and Soviet-era apartment blocks, with some newer buildings added over time.
The area around Uktus was settled in the early 18th century, around the time Ekaterinburg was founded as an industrial city tied to Ural metalworking. Soviet urban planning in the 20th century brought large-scale housing construction that shaped the district as it stands today.
The name Uktus comes from the Udmurt language and roughly means 'river with steep banks', which suits the hilly ground around the area. The slopes nearby draw families from Ekaterinburg on weekends, especially in winter when basic ski runs are open.
Uktus is in the southern part of Ekaterinburg and can be reached by bus from the city center. The district sits close to the Uktus ski area, which is easy to reach on foot or by short taxi ride during winter.
The Uktus ski slopes have been in use since 1929, making them among the oldest still-active ski areas in Russia. Despite their modest height, they hosted national ski jumping competitions well into the 1980s.
