Church of St. Paraskevi, Novgorod
Church of St. Paraskevi, Novgorod, Eastern Orthodox church in Yaroslav's Court, Veliky Novgorod, Russia.
The Church of St. Paraskevi is a religious building in Yaroslav's Court, part of medieval Novgorod, and features three interior sections supported by four central pillars. The walls were built using limestone and a local stone material that was common in the region.
The building was founded in 1207 by Novgorod merchants as a stone structure, replacing two earlier wooden churches built in 1156 and 1191. This shift from wood to stone reflects the city's growing prosperity and importance in medieval trade.
The church displays architectural features from Pre-Mongol Smolensk style that shaped how religious buildings looked across the region. Visitors can see these distinctive design elements in the walls and interior layout.
The church functions as a museum open to visitors interested in exploring medieval architecture and construction techniques. It sits within a historic area that is easily reached on foot and contains several other monuments worth seeing.
During extensive restoration work from 1954 through the 2000s, early medieval masonry layers were discovered hidden within the walls. These hidden layers reveal details about the original building methods and the craft techniques used by builders at that time.
