Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyina Street

The Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyina Street is a stone building with a three-part facade decorated with carved patterns and relief crosses on its exterior. Its interior preserves an extensive collection of medieval painted scenes, particularly across the dome and walls.

Merchants from Ilyina Street funded construction of this stone church in 1374, replacing an earlier wooden building. The painted works were created in the early period of the late Middle Ages and continue to define the church today.

The church displays painted religious scenes that reflect the artistic traditions of medieval Byzantine culture and remain visible on its interior surfaces today. Visitors can observe these works as expressions of faith that shaped the spiritual life of the medieval community.

An artist from Constantinople arrived in Russia in the early late medieval period and created paintings here that survive nowhere else. His artistic hand appears in only a handful of Russian churches, making this place exceptionally rare.
