Volotovo Church

Volotovo Church is a medieval structure built with a cross-in-square design topped by a silver dome, located near Veliky Novgorod. The building displays the compact, upright form typical of northern Russian church architecture from the 14th century.

Construction began in 1352 under Archbishop Moses, making it an important religious center in the Novgorod region during the medieval period. The building was destroyed in World War II but was reconstructed during the early 2000s.

The church walls once held detailed frescoes showing religious scenes and sacred figures painted in the medieval Novgorod style. These images reveal how artists of that era worked with light, color, and composition to teach stories to visitors.

The church can be reached by bus from Veliky Novgorod, followed by a walk through the surrounding landscape. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for variable weather, as the area can be muddy during wet seasons.

During restoration work in 2002, workers found a brick with three warriors depicted in a boat, hinting at the craftsmen who built the original structure. This discovery offers rare clues about the people who constructed the medieval building.
