Plotnitsky End

Plotnitsky End is a historic district on the eastern side of the Volkhov River in Veliky Novgorod, preserving medieval wooden buildings and original street patterns. The layout of streets and houses still follows the ancient city plan that shaped the settlement.

The district emerged in the Middle Ages when the city was divided into two parts with a dedicated zone for carpenters. This system of specialized craft quarters shaped Novgorod's growth for centuries.

The district takes its name from the carpenters who settled here and shaped the local identity through their craft. You can still sense this heritage when walking through the narrow streets lined with wooden buildings.

Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the narrow lanes and uneven ground make walking the main way to explore the district. The traditional layout can feel confusing at first, so take time to wander and notice the architectural details along the way.

Excavations have uncovered thousands of wooden artifacts that show how carpenters refined their techniques across generations in this neighborhood. These discoveries document not just tools and building methods but also daily objects that reveal how craftspeople lived here.
