Memorial wall of World War II in Sevastopol, World War II memorial wall at Nakhimov Square, Sevastopol, Russia and Ukraine.
The Memorial Wall of World War II in Sevastopol is a granite structure standing in Nakhimov Square, in the heart of the city. The wall carries the names of the military units and organizations that defended Sevastopol during the war, and three stylized bayonets rise from the top of the structure.
The memorial was built in 1967, about twenty years after the end of the war, to mark the defense of Sevastopol. In later years, extra granite steles were added to honor Heroes of the Soviet Union who fought in the city's defense.
The wall displays inscribed plaques naming the military units that defended the city, giving visitors a concrete sense of who fought here. On Victory Day, people gather at this spot to lay flowers and pay their respects, making the memorial a living part of local memory.
The memorial stands in a public square and can be visited at any time of day without a ticket. The square is easy to reach by public transport and works well as a stop on a broader walk through the city center.
The three bayonets that rise from the top of the wall were chosen to represent the three major German assault waves that the city had to withstand, not just three army branches. This specific detail was a deliberate choice to reflect the intensity of the siege rather than simply honor different military corps.
