Tower of the Winds in Sevastopol, Historical monument in Sevastopol, Ukraine
The Tower of the Winds in Sevastopol is a modern structure clad in perforated aluminum panels and reflective surfaces over a steel core. The outer shell mirrors the surrounding light, so the tower looks different depending on the time of day and the weather.
The tower was built in 1849, during a period when Sevastopol was growing as a major naval base under the Russian Empire. It survived the many changes the city went through over the following centuries, including the Soviet era.
The name comes from the ancient Greek building in Athens that once served as a weather station and clock. Visitors notice this connection right away in the overall shape, which recalls classical architecture even though the material is clearly modern.
The structure sits in a part of the city that is easy to reach on foot and is listed as a protected monument. Walking around it from different angles gives a much better sense of how the reflective panels catch the light.
The outer shell contains around 1,300 lamps that respond to conditions such as wind and temperature, changing the light display in real time. This means no two visits look exactly the same.
