Museum Underground Sevastopol, Underground military museum in Sevastopol, Russia and Ukraine.
Museum Underground Sevastopol is a military underground complex beneath the city of Sevastopol, in Ukraine, made up of tunnels, bunkers, former workshops, and observation posts carved into rock. The spaces are largely kept in their original state, allowing visitors to move through the actual rooms and corridors once used by the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.
The complex was built in the 1950s as a secret facility for the Soviet Black Sea Fleet during the Cold War. After the Soviet Union ended, it was gradually opened to the public as a museum.
The exhibitions show what daily life looked like for the sailors and technicians who worked in these tunnels. Personal objects and original equipment left in place give a concrete sense of the routines that once filled these spaces.
Warm clothing is a good idea year-round, since the temperature inside the tunnels stays cool regardless of the season above ground. Guided tours are available and make it much easier to follow the layout and understand what each section was used for.
Parts of the tunnel network were cut by hand directly into the rock, with workers using basic tools over many years. The finished facility was designed to withstand a nuclear strike, which is why the walls and ceilings are unusually thick.
