Kirovograd Ponds, reservoir in Russia
Kirovograd Ponds are three water bodies that follow the course of the Gородня River in south Moscow. They are connected by channels and separated by small dams, with open banks, grass slopes, and some trees surrounding the area.
These ponds formed in the 1970s after the Gородня River was diverted into an underground pipe, leaving the upper sections to become water bodies. Recent renovation work in 2017 replaced concrete edges with grass on some shorelines.
The name comes from a nearby street in this Moscow district. You will find locals sitting by the water, feeding fish, walking along the paths, or gathering with friends for leisure throughout the year.
The ponds are accessible by metro from nearby stations like Prazskaya and Ulitsa Akademika Yangelya. The paths around the area are smooth and suitable for walking or cycling throughout the year.
Hidden below ground are pipes that feed the ponds and maintain stable water levels, something most visitors never notice. In winter the frozen surface becomes a place for cross-country skiing, a local tradition many residents enjoy.
